The Supreme Court has dismissed a case filed by Nigeria’s 36 states seeking to compel the Federal Government to account for earnings from the sale of liquefied natural gas since 1999.
In a unanimous decision, Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, supported by six other justices, ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.
The court held that the case had been addressed in an earlier ruling involving the Attorney General of Bauchi State and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
The states sought orders for accountability and redistribution of LNG revenues, amounting to $17 billion, into the federation account. However, the court deemed the claims an attempt to re-litigate previously resolved issues, emphasizing that the subject fell outside its original jurisdiction.
