The authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, have concluded arrangements to install Closed-Circuit Television(CCTV) cameras in the various offices of lecturers on campus.

The decision, a reliable source said was aimed at curbing the rising cases of sexual harassment against female students by lecturers of the university.

Recall that in August the management of the university announced the suspension of some lecturers accused of sexual harassment.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone, removed a lecturer( name withheld) in the Faculty of Law, and others accused of sexual harassment by students of the University.

Meanwhile, lecturers were said to be furious with the idea of mounting CCTV cameras in their offices

They claimed that the decision was an infringement on their privacy and a gross violation of their fundamental human rights to hold unhindered and uncensored discussions with their students.

But Vice Chancellor had insisted that there would be no going back on the plan and that discussions that should take place with students must not be in secret.

He noted that lecturers were paid with tax payers money and therefore they should know or be privy to how lecturers discharge their formal duties.

A source who supported the CCTV project said, “This will boost the confidence of the students as communications would no longer be shrouded in secrecy.
