President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian Finance Minister, made history in 2021 as the first African and woman to lead the WTO. Her second four-year term begins on September 1, 2025.
President Tinubu lauded her re-election as a testament to the global community’s trust in her leadership and commitment to advancing multilateral trade for sustainable development.
In a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the WTO’s mission, emphasizing the country’s commitment to equitable trade practices. He expressed confidence in Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s ability to strengthen the WTO’s role in driving inclusive global economic growth over the next four years.
