A massive fire gutted the Katako Timber Market in Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday night, destroying over 107 shops and goods worth millions of naira.
Shuaibu Ali, Chairman of the Plateau State Carpenters Association, confirmed the incident, describing it as a recurring problem. He received a distress call around 11 p.m. and rushed to the scene, where the blaze had spread uncontrollably. Emergency services and security agents eventually contained the fire.
The disaster affected over 200 people, mostly carpenters. Local Government Chairman Chris also confirmed the incident and stated that investigations into the cause are ongoing.
Residents have called for proactive measures to prevent future occurrences, as this marks yet another devastating fire in the market.
