European football governing body UEFA has strongly criticised FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend the one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, describing the move as a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of football’s rules.

The dispute erupted ahead of the United States’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after FIFA’s disciplinary committee overturned Balogun’s automatic suspension, making him eligible for selection despite receiving a straight red card in the previous round.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, UEFA said FIFA had “crossed a red line” by intervening in what it considered a straightforward disciplinary matter.According to UEFA, football’s credibility depends on the consistent application of rules across all competitions, warning that exceptions made under pressure could damage trust in the sport.

“Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line,” UEFA said.

The organisation added that while some regulations may be open to interpretation, the circumstances surrounding Balogun’s punishment were clear and did not warrant such an extraordinary intervention.

UEFA further argued that the World Cup carries enormous influence across global football and that controversial rulings at the tournament could have far-reaching consequences beyond the competition itself.

“Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws,” the statement read.

Balogun had initially been ruled out of the Belgium encounter after receiving a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.The striker, who has emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament with three goals, was dismissed following a VAR review which determined that he had stepped on the foot of a Bosnian defender.

Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card automatically carries a one-match suspension. However, the situation took a dramatic turn after reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to seek a review of the punishment.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly questioned the decision, increasing pressure on football’s governing body.

On Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogun’s suspension would be put on hold for a probationary period of one year, effectively allowing the forward to feature against Belgium. The organisation offered no detailed explanation for the decision, sparking widespread criticism across the football community.

Trump later welcomed the development, posting on Truth Social that FIFA had corrected what he described as a “great injustice.”

The decision also drew a sharp reaction from Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia, who expressed disbelief at the timing and nature of the ruling.

“I didn’t know that at the FIFA World Cup, the 5th of July is now the 1st of April and that it’s April Fool’s Day,” Garcia remarked.

The controversy has intensified debate over political influence in sport, with critics arguing that disciplinary matters should remain independent of external pressure.

UEFA warned that any perception of unequal treatment could undermine confidence in football’s governance structures and set a troubling precedent for future tournaments. The governing body insisted that rules must be applied consistently to all players and teams, regardless of status, nationality or political influence.

With Balogun now available for selection, attention will shift to the United States’ crucial knockout clash against Belgium, but the fallout from FIFA’s decision is likely to continue long after the final whistle.
