Uganda is embarking on the restoration of a British-era railway line after failing to secure funding from China for a new standard gauge railway (SGR).
This was stated by John Linnon Sengendo, spokesman for the state-run Uganda Railways Corporation.
He said that the restored line will significantly reduce shipping costs to the country’s north, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Previously, Uganda canceled a $2.2bn SGR contract with China Harbour and Engineering Company Ltd. China Road and Bridge Corporation will undertake the restoration within two years for 200 billion shillings ($55.48m) provided by the Ugandan government.
The railway network, originally built during British colonial rule in the early 20th century, has been inactive for nearly 40 years.
