The Umuawulu community in Awka South, has sent a Save Our Souls message to the Anambra state government to fulfill its promise of building a new bridge across Haba River in the community.
The call was made after an inspection visit by the Managing Director of the Anambra State Road Maintenance Agency, Engineer Emeka Okoye, to the collapsing Haba bridge built by one its illustrious sons, late Chief Chukwudi Okafor.
The traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, who was part of the inspection team, told the press that the bridge had been inspected by governor Willie Obiano and other government officials with a promise to fix it.
The royal father appealed to the governor to release funds to commence the construction of a new bridge which remains the best option, to save the bridge from total collapse during this rainy season.
He noted that erosion is eating deep into both sides of the bridge leading to the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Umuawulu.
Reacting also, the President General of the community Chief Ikechukwu Nkala, urged the state government to do the needful of constructing a new bridge across the Haba River, while a former Deputy Chairman for Awka South Local Government, Barrister Chike Oranye, noted that the bridge is strategic as commuters travelling beyond Anambra State to States like Imo, Abia and other parts of the country ply through the route.
