The United States Mission in Nigeria on Friday advised its citizens to keep away from planned protests across Nigeria on June 12.
This comes as several groups have announced their intentions to protest on June 12 – democracy Day.
In an advisory targeted at US citizens, the US Mission noted that police presence and response can be expected nationwide, including in Abuja where government events are scheduled to celebrate the national holiday and in Lagos where simultaneous protests are planned.
Adding that likely locations for the protests in Abuja will be: Unity Fountain, Wuse, Berger Roundabout, Aguiyi Ironsi Way, Airport Road, and British Circle,
It stated that in Lagos: Lekki Toll Gate and Gani Fawehinmi Park were likely hotspots, suggesting the protests may begin as early as 7 a.m.
The advisory further warned that citizens should avoid the areas of the demonstrations, exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, monitor local media for updates, and keep a low profile.
Earlier on Friday, the National Association of Nigerian Students said it had suspended its planned June 12 protest, citing concerns of the safety of the protesters and the fear of a possible hijack by politicians.
The Lagos State Police Command has said it is not aware of any planned protest in Lagos State to commemorate the 2021 Democracy on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson in the state – Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, therefore appealed to members of the public to disregard any sit-at-home order called by certain groups as being circulated on social media, and go about their lawful businesses, as the police and other security agencies have made necessary arrangement to maintain law and order across the state.
Furthermore, Adejobi noted that the commissioner, also created special Squads to go after traffic robbers who have been terrorizing Lagosians and rid the state of such miscreants.
He added that the CPO equally released some crime fighting equipment and modern communication gadgets to the Squads for efficiency and better service delivery as some of the identified areas like Eko Bridge, Apongbon, Cele, Ijora, Ojota/7up, Mile 12, Surulere amongst others.
