On The Foreign Scene
The United States has officially withdrawn from UNESCO, the UN’s cultural and education agency, accusing it of promoting divisive causes and being biased against Israel.
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce announced the exit on Tuesday, stating that continued involvement was no longer in America’s national interest. She criticized UNESCO’s focus on global sustainability goals and its 2011 decision to admit Palestine as a member state.
This marks the second US pullout in recent history—first under Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, then again under Donald Trump in 2017. President Biden had reinstated membership before this latest withdrawal.
