Nigeria has lost its Category One aviation status with the United States, meaning direct flights between the two countries are now suspended.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has delisted Nigerian airlines from its Category One status due to a lack of direct flights to or from the U.S. in the past two years. With Nigeria missing from the list of African countries that meet international aviation safety standards, this change affects the ability of Nigerian carriers to operate directly to the U.S.
The new FAA rule, which took effect recently, mandates that countries failing to operate flights under the ‘Open Skies’ agreement for two years undergo recertification. This process involves a detailed review of airport security, airline operations, and aircraft standards.
For now, Nigerian airlines like Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines will need to fly to the U.S. via third countries until they meet the necessary requirements for direct operations.
