Wife of the Governor of Anambra State Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano has visited four Holding Centres where flood victims in Ogbaru and Onitsha North Local Government Areas are being catered for.
The Holding Centres located at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Ossomala, Atani, Central School, Odekpe, Ogbaru Local Government Headquarters and the Bishop Crowther Primary School, Onitsha North even as the currently has 17 holding centres across the six Local Government Areas heavily affected by flooding including Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha North and Onitsha South.
Addressing the people in each of the camps, Mrs Obiano and founder Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the flood which have occurred as a result of climate change has left the Government no choice other than to make sure that victims were in safe places.
She expressed displeasure over the situation, emphasizing that her joy as a mother would not be complete if she did not visit to see how the people were faring in spite of the pandemic.
Speaking further, Mrs Obiano pointed out that its a sad situation that people were displaced from their homes while affirming her committement as a mother to all Anambrarians necessitated her visit. She then urged the people to keep their faith alive while assuring them that the State Government would ensure they were well cared for while at the centres.
The Governor’s wife was represented by the Commissioner for Social Welfare Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala said that health workers had been to the 17 holding centres in the six LGAs affected by floodwaters to give care to the victims, adding that a team of case searchers were set up to identify problems in the centres and to collect samples which would help to determine possible cases of COVID-19 pandemic in such centres while commending the efforts of Government at the holding centres.
Also Transition Committee Chairman Ogbaru LGA Mr Arinze Awogu explained that a total of 1,631 persons were currently taking shelter at Ossomala centre while 1,735 were at the Atani site and 978 persons at Odekpe.
High point of the event was donation of items such as drugs, mattresses, bags of rice, beans, garri, tubers of yam, cartons of noodles, bread, detergent, disinfectants, gallons of oil, cartons of biscuits, diapers, children clothing, foot wears, general household items and other essentials.
