World Albinism Day: Anambra Disability Rights Commission Promises Intervention On Skin Cancer

The Chairman/CEO, Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie, said he is optimism that Anambra State government will intervene promptly to persons with albinism plights in fighting skin cancer.

He was addressing persons with albinism in Anambra State on the occasion of this year’s Albinism Awareness Day celebration organised by the Association at Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.

Barrister Ezewuzie, reacting to the theme of this year’s celebration, “United in making our voices heard”, encouraged them  to  start being vocal through individual awareness campaigns, to people in their  local areas to help change the myths and misconception about albinism issues.

“People need to be educated on matters relating to albinism especially parents.

“Many parents don’t know their roles in taking care of children with albinism.

“Cancer cut people’s lives short but if you can avoid the sun ray and live a healthy life style by avoiding those things that trigger cancer cells, then you can live long and happy.”

Barrister Ezewuzie assured them that Anambra State Disability Rights Law is ever ready to intervene in case of any complaint about discrimination against them because of their skin colour.

He futher advised members of the Albinism Community in the state to always ‘Say Something When They See Something’ by taking the complaints to Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, for necessary actions to be taken and ensure justice for the victim.

In her contributions, former Nigeria Ambassador to South Africa, Amb Uche Ajulu, charged Anambra State Albinism Association to take their awareness campaigns to Ministries of Health, Education and other relevant agencies both in the state and federal level, advocating the rights of PWAs in the state.

On June 5 2021, some persons with albinism came together to form Anambra State Albinism Association and it is a recognised cluster with Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Anambra State Chapter (DRC).
