World Teachers Day: Teachers Celebrate Their Day In Grand Style, As Gov. Soludo Inaugurates PPSSC, ASUBEB Boards
Teachers in Anambra State, on Wednesday, 5th October, 2022, joined their counterparts the world over to celebrate Teachers’ Day, to commemorate the gift of teachers and the teaching profession globally.
The theme for this year’s celebration is, “The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers”.
In Anambra state, the occasion was iconic following the inauguration of the Boards of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSSC, and the Anambra State Universal Basic Education, ASUBEB, by Governor Chukwuma Soludo at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
At the NUT House where the teachers celebrated themselves, Governor Soludo charged teachers to use their positions as change agents to mould the characters of the upcoming generations.
Entrusting the future of children in the hands of teachers, the governor assured them of his commitment towards enhancing their welfare.
To this end, he assured them that the issue of their promotions will be looked into, stating that he has implicit trust in the Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu led PPSSC to handle their welfare.
The governor announced that government would work towards signing into law through the State House of Assembly, a bill to amend the retirement of teachers from 60 years to 65.
The bill, according to him when passed into law, will be made optional for teachers to retire at 60 or 65 years.
The governor used the occasion to assure the people of his resolve to keep the state clean, secure the lives of the citizenry, and to embark on the rehabilitation of the roads he recently flagged off.
The Commissioner for Education, represented on the occasion by the Acting Director of Technical/Vocational Education in the Ministry of Education, Lady Ngozi Enemuo, spoke of the importance of teachers in society and the need for them to be accorded all the respects they deserve as the moulders of the characters of the children.
She commended Professor Soludo for being teacher friendly, and needs to be greatly supported.
In an address, the State Chairman of the NUT, Comrade Nonye Chibueze, commended the governor for the payment of the arrears of teachers’ leave allowance for 2021, revamping the education sector within his 6 months in office, and for extending his hands of fellowship to them.
In another message, the state Chairman, All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr. Jovita Arazu, lauded governor Soludo for the prompt payment of teachers salaries and urged that more be given to them to enhance their productivity.
Mr. Arazu called on the Nigerian government to recognize the inestimable role of teachers in the society.
Others who wants teachers to be fully recognized and appreciated in society include the one time state chairman of NUT, Comrade Ifeanyi Ofordile, the national president of the old boys of the Comprehensive Special Technical College, Nawfia, and a Professor of repute Monsignor John Paul Nzomiwu.
The teachers day celebration attracted the state deputy governor, Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim, the deputy speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right honourable Paschal Agbodike, the State Chairman of Post Primary Schools Service Commission among others.
