Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson for the Peter Obi/Datti Baba-Ahmed Presidential Campaign Council, has stated that reforming the electoral process is more crucial now than the proposed single-tenure rotational presidency to deepen democracy.
Tanko, a former National Chairman of the defunct National Conscience Party (NCP), shared this view in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. He emphasized that electoral reform is essential for ensuring the emergence of credible leaders across all government levels.
According to Tanko, deepening democracy to guarantee the emergence of credible leaders should be a key focus in the ongoing constitutional amendment process. He argued that discussions on a single tenure of six years and rotational presidency should not be the current priority.
He urged the National Assembly to concentrate on enhancing the electoral process to promote democracy.
In a related discussion with NAN, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, expressed support for the ideas of a rotational presidency and a single six-year term for presidents and governors. However, he noted that rotational presidency might not align with democratic principles.
Recall that a bill proposing a single six-year term for the President and state governors, along with the rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones, was recently introduced by 35 members of the House of Representatives.
The group, known as Reformed-minded Legislators, argued that these proposals would reduce the cost of governance and promote unity and development in the country. The group’s spokesperson, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, emphasized that these changes would ensure seamless power transitions and boost national development.
