2023 Election: Women Group Clamour For Ekwunife’s Return To Senate
Says She Is Most experienced, Most Accepted
Coalition of Anambra Women Societies, Anambra Central Senatorial District, has endorsed Uche Ekwunife, Senatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for another term in the Senate.
The women’s groups made their stand known during a Press Briefing held at David Hotel, Awka, on Tuesday, 1st November, 2022.
The Communiqué read by Mrs Oge Ekweozor, on behalf of the group, described Ekwunife as most experienced and accepted candidate to represent the zone following her outstanding legislative performance.
She said the Senator remained one of the few women in politics who had broken the gender bias and redefined representation with a deep sense of courage.
She said, “Having evaluated the performance of Sen. Ekwunife, her impactful constituency projects in the 55 communities in the zone and the need to consolidate and expand on the possible principal position as a second term senator.
“We the coalition of Anambra women groups hereby unanimously endorse Sen. Ekwunife for second term to consolidate on the gains her unrivaled representation has brought to constituents in the state.
“It is our believe that Sen. Ekwunife is one of the active female Senators at the National Assembly and the best legislator to have represented the zone since 1999.
“We hope that her return to the Senate and hopefully as a principal officer, will birth more developmental projects for the constituents, south east and Nigeria at large.”
The women urged other women and youths to mobilise votes for Sen. Ekwunife in the communities as a demonstration of trust in her candidature to continue to transform Anambra Central.
Also speaking, another member of the group, Mrs Eucharia Anekwe, said the endorsement was part of the Anambra Women Agenda known as ‘Nwanyibuife’, to drive the progress and development of women in the state.
“We are worried about the low participation of women in politics and electoral process as well as the low representation and appoint of women in the state’s and nation’s political space.
“Our agenda is to massively mobilise support for any qualified woman who is vying for elective position across parties, hence, we are endorsing Sen. Ekwunife, ” she said.
Reacting, Legislative Assistant to Ekwunife, Mrs Ifeyinwa Chinwuko, appreciated the women for recognising the legislator’s outstanding performance.
According to her, Uche Ekwunife had ensured shared responsibility, continuous infrastructure development, youth and women empowerment and grassroot economic growth, through resilient representation”.
