Anambra State Government has waded into the issue which arose from the implementation of the Central Bridgehead Market leadership initiative to construct a road from the Timber section (Niger Street) into the market for ease of movement.
The initiative was not accepted by some members of the Timber dealers, who obstructed and halted the progress which had been recorded by the market leadership.
To that effect, the Commissioner for Trade and Agriculture yesterday visited Timber and Butchers Union markets at the Bridgehead Central Market in Onitsha with the committee with the aim to look into the matter.
The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, who also is the Committee head, Hon Uche Okafor Wiper, pleaded with all the interested parties to let peace reign so that development can thrive.
He also noted that the road when fully completed will ease traffic from the express way into the markets and make the shops more attractive.
He therefore called on them to support the initiative of the Bridgehead Central Market Leadership.
Reminding both parties that the land belongs to the state government and no one can lay claims on the ownership, Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Nnamdi Onukwuba asked the warring parties to sheath their swords as Government only has the interest of people at heart.
The President General Of Bridgehead market, Mr Sunday Obinze, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, while hoping for speedy resolving of the issues at hand.
The Chairmen Of Timber Dealers and Butchers Union, Chief Emmanuel Obunso and Mr Izuchukwu Nweke, also pledged their commitment to peace and development of the market.
A follow up meeting between the interested parties and the Committee for Thursday 5th August, 2021 by 9am in Awka.
