Communities in Anambra State have been told to step up actions in fighting insecurity in their areas and the state by extension.
The advice was given at a joint meeting of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, which took place at ASATU office, Government House, Awka.
Also present were Presidents General of ASATU Women Wing and the Youth Wing.
The various arms of the union all affirmed the need to ensure adequate security of lives and property of the citizens.
Speaking on the resolutions at the meeting, the National President of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo, noted the need to improve the welfare and stipends of Community Vigilante Personnel, as well as provision of vehicles and motorbikes, to enable them reach the remotest parts of their communities.
Chief Akpudo appealed to the State Government, to channel the third phase of Community Choose Your Project Initiative Funds to improvement of security architecture so as to re-enforce the vigilantees, provide the database of non-indigenes in communities as well as commercial drivers in the areas.
He further urged the youths to work in synergy with the Presidents General of their communities, on how to improve their welfare, promising that they would further discuss with traditional rulers
the National Secretary of the Association, Professor Charles Nwadigwe, suggested that communities should errect barriers at the entrances from major roads to know when strangers enter their communities.
Contributing, the National President Of ASATU Women Wing, Lady Franca Nwigbo, and the Vice President, Mrs Ijeoma Esione, spoke on the need to install street lights at some strategic points as well as provision of security/communication gadgets such as walkie-talkie to vigilante operatives.
Also speaking, the National President Of ASATU Youth Wing, Mr Patrick Aghamba, and the National Secretary, Mr Emeka Okoye-Ozo, regretted that the strength of policemen have been undermined , making it necessary to strengthen the capacity of the AVGS.
They recommended that each Community recruit about fifty youths to join in vigilantee services and extolled Governor Willie Obiano’s commitment in addressing security issues in the state.
