At least 54 people were killed and scores more injured after a truck transporting migrants crashed in southern Mexico.
According to reports, more than 150 people, said to be migrants from Central America, were crammed into the truck’s trailer when it fell, in the state of Chiapas.
In a scene described as horrific, and the worst in a single day in Mexico since 2010 victims were seen crying for help and writhing in pain before emergency operatives cleared the scene. Forty-nine people were confirmed dead at the scene and five more died in hospital, according to Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandón who added that some 105 people – 83 men and 22 women – were also injured in the crash.
The truck was reportedly speeding when it flipped on a sharp bend and hit a pedestrian bridge on a main road leading to the Chiapas state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, at about 15:30 local time on Thursday.
Chiapas, which neighbours Guatemala, is a major transit point for undocumented migrants.
