Former Nigerian Military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, has described military intervention in politics today as an aberration.
Ibrahim Babangida, in a chat with the media, listed some obvious reasons why he thinks that any soldier who plots coup at this moment is stupid.
According to him many factors are against the military rule style, especially because it is no longer accepted globally, and therefore, cannot be encouraged.
The former Head of State was of the opinion that from about 1989 till now, things have changed, and the whole world has embraced democracy, economic reform and open market.
He pointed out that there is no place for the military in those things that are being accepted now so it is best done by politicians and civilians as the world is becoming closer together.
Babangida posited that only stupid soldiers will attempt a coup now because the moment they take over a government in West Africa subregion, ECOWAS, African Union, European Union as well as the superpowers will come after them.
He further explained that everything they have to do in terms of development politically and otherwise will not be accepted until the country belongs to the comity of nations, citing Mali as an example.
