The commissioner of Information Anambra State, Mr Paul Nwosu has revealed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo says putting Money in National Light Newspapers is not one of his priorities.
Nwosu made these statement during the reverse 2022 budget defence while answering questions from the Anambra Assembly house committee on information in Awka.
The commissioner who revealed that he kicked against the idea of scraping National Light Newspapers said Ndi-anambra are being employed by the organization and for that reason should be left to continue to function.
According to the Commissioner,at the inception of the government of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Mr Governor made it very clear that oil money is not coming and has been emphasizing on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and because of lack of funds, that he will now prioritize what he has to do.
He said that he the believes that if other national dailies are doing well and are been petronised, they can do something about National Light Newspapers and get it to be competitive.
The Commissioner said that National Light has subvention but it is not enough to run the organization. He also stated that he can restructure the organization and Governor Soludo has given him the mandate to do so and it is already a work in process.
Reacting, MD/CEO National Light Newspapers, Sir Chuka Nnabuife said It is high time government and the house of Assembly determine weather to scrap the organization or not.
He said he has been appearing before these committee and there have never been approval. Not a machine, not a dime. He said he is receiving a subvention of ten million and running a printing organization these days is expensive.
He said that if the government provides equipment, they will deliver. He has written a memo to both the past and present administration.
The house committee members advised the commissioner to consider National Light Newspapers in it’s next budget.
National Light Newspapers is owned by the government of Anambra State.
