A couple in Ogun state has been arrested for selling their one-month-old baby for 50 thousand naira.
The couple, Mr and Mrs Onyebuchi Eze who reside in the Ilara area of Ode-Remo in Remo North LGA were arrested by the Ogun State Police following a tip-off by a concerned citizen. Confirming the incident, the Command Spokesperson DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said the couple were arrested and brought to the station where they said that one Mrs Ruth Obajimi directed the buyer, who is at large, to them.
According to the couple, Mrs Ruth Obajimi came to them on the 14 of December posing to be from the Human Rights and promised to help them foster their baby. The woman gave them the sum of 50 thousand naira after which they handed the baby to the woman, even though they have never met the woman before.
The DSP said that efforts are underway to apprehend the woman and the baby. In the meantime, the case has been transferred to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation.
