A High Court sitting in Anambra has ordered the Anambra state government and the state Commissir of Police to remove all roadblocks in the state.
Giving his judgement in the case of Francis Moneke versu Anambra State Governmnet and Ors {A/Misc. 194/2021} delivered on 25 January, 2022, Hon Justice Ike Ogu held that the government and police had no legal justification in erecting roadblocks on major roads in Anambra state in the guise of checkmating insecurity. The Judge held that such illegal blockage blatantly violated the applicant’s right to freedom of movement. The court also ordered the state government and police to immediately remove every roadblock in Anambra state to allow free movement of persons and vehicles.
Justice Ike Ogu also ordered the respondents to pay some amount of money to the applicant as compensation for the violation of his fundamental right to freedom of movement.
The roadblocks which took effect on April 6, 2021 Nibo, Amawbia and other points in the state have caused untold hardship on the people, causing some business premises to shut down or relocate due to low patronage.
