Nigerian athletes disqualified from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games for failing to meet the Olympic testing standard took to the streets of Tokyo in protest on Friday.
According to reports, the athletes – 10 in number, had duly qualified to represent the country in the track and field events but were – alongside 8 other athletes from other countries, declared ineligible to participate in the games by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) in a statement on Wednesday, for falling short of testing standards for Category A countries – which Nigeria belongs to.
Subsequently, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) took responsibility for the lapses recorded during the process and reassured Nigerians that the nation’s performances at the Olympics would not be negatively impacted.
The affected athletes: Ruth Usoro, Favour Ofili, Annette Echikunwoke, Chioma Onyekwere, Glory Patrick, Chidi Okezie, Tima Godbless, Rosemary Chukwuma, Yinka Ajayi, and Knowledge Omovoh, however on Friday, marched through some of the streets of Tokyo carrying placards with various inscriptions as they registered their displeasure over the situation – which they stated was no fault of theirs, and condemned Nigerian administrators.
