Excessive Economic Hardship, Insecurity In Nigeria Threaten Nation’s Peace

The Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Bishop, Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, has warned that the unbearable pain of poverty and hunger that Nigerians are facing may result into unbearable situation that may unseat the peace of the nation-Nigeria.

Delivering his Sermon during the 2nd session of the 13th Synod of the Diocese, which took place at the Church of Pentecost, Awka, on Saturday, Archbishop Ibezim who spoke in Awka on Saturday, 4th May, 2024, Archbishop Ibezim lamented that Nigerians are enduring immense suffering as prices of commodities soar higher and higher every day.

He described the economic policies of the President Tinubu led administration as one bereft of necessary values for the economy and called on the President to overhaul his economic policies

Archbishop Ibezim also called for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), describing his continued detention as “national embrassment”.

According to him, the people of Eastern Nigeria has suffered a great deal in Nigeria and that for Nigeria to be peaceful, the Igbo must be given a chance in the National Leadership of the country.

“The unbearable pain of poverty and hunger that Nigerians are forced to endure may result to unbearable situation that may unseat the peace of this nation . Compounded by the weakening naira due to the forex exchange situation and increased pump price of fuel and electricity tariff, we pause to ponder what the leadership of country is doing to avert the looming danger or crises. As a result, Nigeria is rapidly transiting on the way to economic and political perdition. May God help our nation, Nigeria.”

”The President, Ahmed Tinubu , as a matter of urgency, should release Nnamdi Kanu for peace to reign. Justice delayed is justice denied. Eastern Nigeria has suffered a lot and for Nigeria to be peaceful, the Igbos must be given a chance in National Leadership of the country. The truth remains that injustice sets back a nation and once an ideology about injustice is imbibed into a people, no amount of force can quell it unless justice is done.” he said.

Beaming his light on Anambra state, the Archbishop commended the developmental strides of Soludo led administration.

He urged the governor not to relent in his resolve to deliver on his promises and also drew the governor’s attention to some areas in the state grappling with the menace of cultism and touting, calling on him also to look into abuse of power by some government agencies.

In a remark, the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, noted that the Church has enormous roles to play in today’s society in view of the numerous challenges confronting the country.

Speaker Udeze highlighted the urgent need for Church leaders to intensify efforts in the ministry of children so as to catch them young into noble characters as they grow into maturity, redirecting them in the path of moral rectitude.

The 3-day Synod with the theme “Running the Christian Race: Implications for the church in perilous times” attracted the presence of over 25 Bishops, hundreds of clergy, traditional rulers, government functionaries among others.

The Synod is expected to round off on Sunday, 5th May, 2024.
