The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining in the country’s mining sector. He made it known during his visit to Ibadan on Monday when he led a federal government delegation to pay condolences to the Oyo State Government over the recent explosion at Bodija Estate in Ibadan.
The minister pointed out that powerful individuals in Nigeria were linked to the banditry associated with illegal mining, emphasizing that much of the insecurity and terrorism related to the mining sector were sponsored by influential figures.
Alake highlighted collaborative efforts between the Federal Government, state and local governments, and host communities with in-depth knowledge of the local terrain to address the issue.
He mentioned the utilization of both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies and tactics to combat illegal mining, emphasizing that the problem spans across various societal classes.
The minister disclosed that the Federal Government would await the final report of forensic investigations into the Bodija estate explosion before making critical decisions regarding the incident.
Alake, also , emphasized the need for caution, stating that making solid pronouncements before the forensic reports are ready would be presumptuous and potentially misleading.
He urged Nigerians to be safety-conscious and report suspicious activities in their environment promptly, emphasizing the importance of early reporting to prevent negative outcomes.
Alake concluded by highlighting the importance of developing an attitude of reporting atrocious activities in neighborhoods and stressed the need for heightened awareness regarding safety.
