A fire incident that occurred at early hours of yesterday, Saturday, 6th March, 2021, at Amobi Street within the vicinity of Ochanja Market, razed five buildings housing plastic and rubber footwear dealers, and also destroyed goods worth over five hundred million naira.
The cause of the fire was not immediately ascertained, but sources at the scene told reporters that a suspected electricity surge caused the fire incident as it started immediately PHCN restored power to the area early Saturday morning.
According to an eyewitness living in the neighborhood, the fire started from one building at around 4:am housing rubber foot wares and plastics, before spreading to other nearby houses, destroying goods and properties valued at over 500 million naira.
People living in the adjoining houses ran out from their homes as the fire spread rapidly.
Some Shop owners and neighbours at the scene could do little to quench the fire as its intensity was so much and it was spreading quickly.
Rather, they resorted to salvaging some of their goods and properties from the adjoining houses in case it spread to those areas.
However, hours later, Anambra state fire service men from Onitsha Main Market arrived the scene to help put out the fire.
Some traders and shop owners were seen wailing in anguish as they watched the means of their livelihood being razed by the inferno.
Others were seen picking what was left from the rubble.
Many also lamented repeated cases of the fire disaster in the area within a short space of time and called for serious investigations to unravel the cause with a view to checking the menace.
