In a health battle that seems to threaten to overwhelm hospitals in France due to the coronavirus, the country has entered its third national lockdown .

Following Friday’s biggest jump in five months which saw the number of seriously ill covid patients in intensive care units increased by 145, the country has declared curfew from 19:00 to 6:00 while all schools and non essential shops will shut for four weeks.

President Emmanuel Macron has promised more hospital beds for Covid-19 patients.

In addition to restrictions that were enforced over the weekend, people will need a valid reason to travel more than 10km or Six miles from their homes.

President Macron had looked forward to keeping the coronavirus cases in check without having to impose another lockdown but the country has struggled with an European Union delay in the vaccine rollout as well as several new strains of the virus.

On Friday, France recorded 46,677 new cases of the virus and 304 deaths. As of the time of filing this report, France is currently battling a peak of about 5,000 covid patients in ICU. France has recorded 4.74 million cases of covid-19 with 96,493 deaths.
