Governor Soludo Rewards Team Anambra’s Medal Winners with Over N25 Million
In a remarkable show of appreciation, His Excellency Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has awarded cash rewards totaling over N25 million to the outstanding athletes of Team Anambra who excelled at the 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) and the 7th National Youth Games (NYG). The grand presentation took place on Thursday, 21st December 2023, at a reception held at the Alex Ekweme Square in Awka.
Chief Ernest Ezeajughi, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Government, presented the cheques, commending the athletes for being exemplary ambassadors of the state through their representation, conduct, and stellar performances at both the biennial sports festival and annual youth games. He highlighted the government’s commitment to Anambra youths, emphasizing initiatives such as ‘One Youth Two Skills’ and the integration of sports into the economy for youth empowerment.
Patrick Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), lauded Governor Soludo for his unwavering support in advancing the sports sector. Onyedum acknowledged Soludo’s evident love for sports, demonstrated by approvals and support extended to ASSDC programs.
The cash rewards were distributed based on the level of achievement, with Gold medal winners at the 21st NSF receiving N500,000 each. Notable recipients included Ajuluchukwu Okagbue (Scrabble), Njideka Iyiazi (Para Athletics), Covenant Isaac, Obinna Ibedu (Kung Fu), Ujunwa Nwankwo (Karate), and Prince Anagor Gardy (Boxing).
Silver medal winners were not left out, with seven athletes receiving cheques of N300,000 each. Bronze medalists, comprising 24 athletes from the Anambra contingent, were rewarded with N100,000 each.
Gold medalists at the 7th NYG received N200,000 each, while coaches who guided their teams to success were also recognized. The event celebrated Anambra State’s impressive performance at the 21st NSF, where they secured a total of 39 medals (6 Gold, 9 Silver, 24 Bronze), and the 7th NYG, with 22 medals (7 Gold, 6 Silver, 9 Bronze).
The ceremony underscored Governor Soludo’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence in sports, encouraging athletes and coaches alike to continue striving for greatness.
