Gunmen in military attire abduct Nigerian journalist
Gunmen believed to be soldiers on Friday, abducted the editor of FirstNews, Segun Olatunji, from his home in the Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos State.
The report said efforts are on to get more details and cross check reports with army authorities.
It is however not yet established if the abductors are men from the army formations in the country.
According to Olatunji’s wife, ten armed men arrived at their residence and took her husband away without providing any information.
She said they seized his phone and put him in a van before driving off, adding that despite her efforts to find out why he was being taken away, the armed men refused to disclose any information.
The publisher of First News, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the lack of communication regarding Olatunji’s whereabouts.
He mentioned that Olatunji was not formally invited to address any issues related to national security before being abducted.
The management of First News called on the military high command and security agencies to provide information on Olatunji’s location and the reason for his arrest.
They emphasized their commitment to ethical journalism and condemned the manner in which Olatunji was taken away, likening it to the oppressive tactics of the past military regime.
They stressed the importance of freedom of expression and information in the media.
