Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has been convicted on federal gun charges in a historic first for a sitting US president’s child. The 54-year-old was found guilty on all three felony counts related to his 2018 handgun purchase while addicted to drugs.
The conviction comes as President Biden campaigns for reelection and on a day when he is set to address gun violence in Washington. In a statement, the President expressed his love and support for his son, acknowledging the struggles with addiction and the strength in recovery.
The 12-member jury deliberated for about three hours over two days before reaching a verdict. Although Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison, jail time is considered unlikely for the first-time offender.
This case, alongside another pending tax evasion charge in California, adds complexity to the Democratic campaign efforts against the backdrop of former President Donald Trump’s recent conviction on business fraud charges.
Hunter Biden’s legal troubles have also rekindled painful memories for the Biden family, who have faced significant personal tragedies over the years. The White House has confirmed there will be no presidential pardon for Hunter Biden.
