A Nigerian man, Emmanuel Ihejirika, who was previously sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia, has been released after years in prison.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) announced his release in a statement on Friday, crediting the pro bono efforts of Washington-based Nigerian lawyer, Emmanuel Ogebe. Ogebe took up the case, believing it was a case of mistaken identity, and successfully pursued it through the Indonesian Supreme Court.
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended Ogebe’s dedication and urged Nigerians to avoid drug trafficking, warning of Indonesia’s strict penalties, which include the death penalty.
