Following the consideration of the Senate committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Lauretta Onochie has been rejected as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Committee chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya released their report on Tuesday, 13th July, 2021.
The panel recommended Onochie’s disqualification as INEC National Commissioner because her nomination is in violation of Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution on the Principle of Federal Character. The Committee also said there is currently a serving commissioner from Delta state , where Onochie hails from .
The Senate also stood down the approval of Professor Sani Mohammed Adam till further legislative action .
It will be recalled that Nigerians had reacted when Lauretta Onochie’s name was sent to the Senate for approval by President Muhammadu Buhari.
When the news of her rejection was released, Nigerians saw it as a victory for democracy.
