Man Trying To Vandalize Transformer, Steal Cables Electrocuted

By Kalu Idika

A suspect attempting to vandalize a transformer cable belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) was electrocuted in Enugu, in the early hours of Friday.

Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, Emeka Eze, who disclosed this in a statement, said the incident occurred on Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu.

Ezeh described the event as both “tragic and very unfortunate” and highlighted the growing problem of vandalism targeting electricity installations within the EEDC network.

He said, “Early this morning, the lifeless body of an unknown suspect was discovered within the premises of a distribution transformer owned by the EEDC. It appears that the individual was electrocuted when power was restored while he was cutting the armored cables.”

He stressed that vandalism poses a significant challenge to the company, affecting both the quality of service provided to customers and the company’s revenue.

Ezeh further noted the need for the support of critical stakeholders to combat this issue effectively.
