The Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum, a coalition of civil society organizations, has called on Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi to accept the results of the 2023 Nigerian general elections. The coalition, represented by spokesperson Dr. Danladi Ceceko, stated that the election, which saw President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC emerge victorious, was free, transparent, and reflected the will of Nigerians. They emphasized that the Supreme Court upheld the results, reinforcing their legitimacy.
The coalition expressed disappointment in Obi’s criticism of the electoral process, urging respect for institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court. They highlighted inconsistencies in criticisms of INEC, noting that state-level electoral commissions often face more significant issues.
Additionally, the coalition dismissed comparisons between Nigerian and South African elections, pointing out that South Africa also faces electoral challenges.
They urged Nigerians to support and improve their electoral institutions instead of undermining them. The coalition also reminded Obi of his past successes with the same institutions he now critiques, including his restored mandate by the Supreme Court in 2003 and his second term victory in Anambra facilitated by INEC.
