Members of the organized labor have declared a nationwide indefinite strike set to begin at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
This announcement was made by Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), during a press conference at Labour House, Abuja, on Friday.
Negotiations between the Federal Government and organized labor broke down earlier on Friday after the government failed to increase its proposed minimum wage beyond N60,000. The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for the government to meet their demands for a new minimum wage.
On Tuesday, discussions collapsed when the government, along with the organized private sector, increased their offer from N57,000 to N60,000. However, this offer was dismissed by labor representatives. In response, labor adjusted its previous demand from N497,000 to N494,000, a reduction of N3,000.
The impending strike aims to pressure the government to reconsider its position on the minimum wage issue, highlighting the ongoing tension and dissatisfaction among workers with the proposed wage levels.
