The new Yam festival is celebrated in Igbo land to signal the beginning of harvest of crops and thank God for good yields . In the ancient Kingdom of Awka in Anambra state, it is known as Otite, which means Iri Ji.
It was on such note that Onyeka Diamond Nwosu, the son of a popular fan of KPAKPANDO FM “MADAM GHANA”, gathered friends and relatives to celebrate Otite with him and his family.
Explaining to our correspondents at his residence in Umudioka Awka on Saturday, the 8th of October 2022, he said that ‘Iri Ji’ is first marked by the Town as an entity after which, indigenes can carry on with their own individual iri ji. He specified that it is not called iwaji in Awka but Iri ji which means “otite” in Awka parlance.
Mrs Cordelia Ifeyinwa Nwosu, Madam Ghana, described Otite Awka as a significant one because it’s a time mapped out to thank God for His blessings and bountiful harvest.
Madam Ghana thanked the most High God for His riches and blessings upon her family.
She thanked all those that came to rejoice with her family and also prayed that God shall continually bless them.
She also thanked her family members especially her son Onyekachukwu Diamond for making this year’s otite a great event.
Cultural dance from different groups and masquerades thrilled the guests as they were treated to sumptuous meals and the legendary yam dipped in vegetable oil sauce marked highlights of the day.
Dignitaries from all walks of life graced the occassion to rejoice with the family.
