Niger Delta Congress President Detained Over Planned Protest Against Emergency Rule In Rivers
The President of the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has been detained by the Nigeria Police for allegedly planning a protest against declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, by President Bola Tinubu.
It was gathered that the NDC leader was arrested in Port Harcourt on Tuesday and is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Sources said that the police had initially invited the NDC’s Spokesperson, Mudiaga Ogboru, over his vocal opposition to the emergency rule and his call for protests. However, instead of waiting for Ogboru, authorities arrested the NDC President.
Ogboru who confirmed the situation, affirmed that he received invitations from both the Lagos and Rivers State Police Commands regarding the planned protest.
Activists and civil rights groups have condemned the arrest, calling it an attempt to stifle opposition and suppress voices critical of Tinubu’s controversial emergency rule in Rivers State.
