The Labour Party (LP) has urged the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to increase electricity tariffs, citing the historic hardship faced by Nigerians.
Mrs. Olubunmi Odesanya, Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the party, emphasized in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria that the recent tariff hike is unreasonable and would exacerbate the existing economic challenges.
Odesanya highlighted the strain already felt by Nigerians due to the removal of fuel subsidy and stressed that the tariff hike would further burden citizens. She called for a maximum increase of 25 percent if at all necessary.
Expressing concern for the welfare of Nigerians, Odesanya urged the government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens and consider alternative measures to reduce the cost of living, such as cutting down on governance expenses and intensifying efforts to combat corruption.
Additionally, Odesanya emphasized the importance of raising the minimum wage to help workers cope with the rising cost of living.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently announced an increase in electricity tariffs for customers receiving 20-hour power supply daily, with Band A consumers now expected to pay N225 per kilowatt hour, up from the previous N66.
