The Nigerian Army has clarified that the absence of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has not resulted in any leadership vacuum within the military service.
Lagbaja is on official leave, and Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), is acting on his behalf during this period.
In a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army assured that all operations are proceeding as planned, and any claims of a leadership vacuum are mere speculation.
Nwachukwu emphasized that the Army operates under a well-structured system that allows for continuity, even in the absence of its top leaders. He pointed out that routine activities, such as the promotion of officers and ongoing exercises, are continuing smoothly under the direction of the acting COAS.
Onyema also addressed concerns about delays in promotions, confirming that the results for the Captain-to-Major promotion exams were released and that other promotions, such as the Master Warrant Officer to Army Warrant Officer, are progressing as scheduled. He reiterated that the COAS does not personally sign these promotions, as they are handled by the relevant departmental chiefs.
The Army assured the public of its readiness to defend the country and maintain security, despite the temporary absence of the COAS.
