Ogun Customs Service Intercepts Equivalent Of 43 Trailer Loads Of Rice Within Six Months
The Ogun Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Servicey (NCS) says it intercepted a total of 25,906 bags ofthe foreign parboiled rice of 50kg within a period of six months.
This, according to the Customs Service, is an equivalent of 43 trailer loads of paraboiled rice.
The Controller, of the Command, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the half year scorecard of the command held in Abeokuta, the State capital.
He informed that a trailer load of maize meant for popcorn production and imported from South Africa,1,433 cartons of Frozen poultry products and 1,400 packets,2,250 sachets of tramadol, were also among contrabands intercepted by his Command within the period under review.
Comptroller Makinde also intimated that the command has also generated a total of N29,940,146.50 from import duties and auction sales of premium motor spirit seized from smugglers.
Speaking on the smuggled rice, Controller Makinde expressed worry that if the seized quantity had been allowed into Nigerian markets, it would have been disastrous to the Federal Government policy on local rice production and the economy of the nation.
Other seizures recorded during the period included; 1433 cartoons of frozen poultry products, 72 units of used vehicles, 20 units of motorcycles used as means of conveyance and 168 packets of codeine.
Others goods seized are; 289 cartoons of tomato paste, 258 sacks and 661 wraps of cannabis sativa, 140 pieces of used tyres, 343 cartoons of foreign wine, 34 bales, 113 sacks and 36 Ghana-Must-Go bags of second hand clothes, 64 sacks and 2,218 pairs of used footwear, 328 cartoons, 320 sacks and 72 pairs of new footwear, 180 pieces of female hand bags, 375 bales, 925 pieces of textile and 900 pieces of matches.
Makinde further disclosed that the cumulative duty paid value for the seizures within the period under review was Three Billion,Four Hundred Million,Two Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and Seven Naira, Zero Kobo (N3,400,226,707.00.)
While comparing the command performance under review with half year report of 2021, Makinde noted that there was significant increase in revenue collection and value of seizures recorded.
“The revenue generated from January to June last year was N15,261,074.00 compared to this year’s revenue of N29,940,146.50. Similarly, the estimated duty paid value of items seized this year, which is N3,400,226,707.00 is higher than that of last year record, which was N834,765,273.00. This I’d about 400% increase.
“The Command was able to make these achievements due to the following steps taken such as, continuous stakeholders engagement and management, deployment of intelligence in all the operations across the State and structural reorganization of the Command among others Makinde stated.
Controller assured that his Command would continue to dialogue, engage, sensitize and educate the public on social/economic implications of smuggling as well as performing its statutory function of enforcing compliance in line with government fiscal policies.
He pledged his Command’s determination to continue to strengthen the Customs-Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR).
He thanked all critical stakeholders, members of the press and all other security agencies, community leaders and Traditional Rulers for their continuous collaborative efforts and synergy with his Command
