Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally secured his third term in office after an unexpectedly close election forced his party into a coalition to maintain power.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ruled outright for the past decade, faced a tougher electoral battle this time, resulting in a coalition with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This coalition provided the necessary parliamentary numbers for Modi to form the government, although details of any concessions made to secure support remain undisclosed.
In a formal ceremony at the presidential palace Rashtrapati Bhavan, Modi presented signed letters of support to President Droupadi Murmu, who invited him to form the next government. Speaking on Friday evening, Modi expressed gratitude to the voters and coalition partners for the opportunity to serve.
Modi addressed nearly 300 lawmakers forming his coalition in India’s parliament, thanking them for their unanimous support. Leaders of each party in the coalition assured their backing earlier in the week, highlighting the unity among Modi and his new coalition partners.
The alliance, comprising 293 seats in the lower house of parliament out of 543, now faces the task of governing a diverse country with various regional and political interests. Media reports indicate that coalition partners may seek ministerial positions and policy reviews in exchange for their support.
Despite the united front, political analysts suggest that Modi’s new coalition alliances could lead to challenges and potential friction in the future.
Modi and his ministry are scheduled to be sworn in on Sunday evening, with regional leaders from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka confirming their attendance at the ceremony.
