A ministerial committee established by former Sports Minister John Enoh has revealed major administrative failings within the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), including lapses that led to Favour Ofili’s exclusion from the women’s 100 meters at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Team Nigeria’s Olympic performance was marred by controversies, with Ofili’s non-registration in the 100 meters being the most notable issue. Despite qualifying, Ofili was omitted from Nigeria’s entry list due to miscommunication between the AFN and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC).
The committee, chaired by Mumini Alao, recommended sanctions against AFN officials. Technical Director Samuel Onikeku was faulted for failing to act on rumors about Ofili’s registration, showing poor judgment. Secretary General Rita Mosindi also faced recommendations for sanctions due to negligence, as she could not provide adequate evidence confirming Ofili’s registration.
The committee proposed an N8 million compensation to Ofili for the distress caused by her omission, stressing that the situation could have been prevented with timely action.
