ONWA AGWU: Ozo Akutibo Celebrates Ime Agwu
It was a turn-up of masquerades of different types at Izuchukwu Ekpeha Ozo Akutigbo’s Compound on Saturday, July, 29th in Akabor, Mbaukwu as he celebrated Ime Agwu, Onwa Agwu, a cultural and traditional feast that takes place in Igboland annually.
Izuchukwu stated that traditionalists are not ideal worshippers nor evil but some wicked elements are among them to tarnish their image. He also said that traditionalists are chosen by the gods.
Agwu is also known as the god of possession and divinity which most people mistake for the devil.
In the central sub-cultural zone of Igbo land, the symbol of Agwu is ogilisi or ogbu tree. This is usually planted near the Agwu shrine. Agwu is fed every morning with kola, portion of food and hot wine as the case may be. When Agwu possesses a person, it is placated through the process of iru Agwu.
Some highlight and side attraction of the event was performances and dance from masquerades from Mbaukwu and neighboring towns. Ajo-fia and Odogwu Opa Masquerade from Awkaetiti, which is known for its dance show also graced the occasion.
