Goods Worth Millions Of naira were destroyed when parts of the popular Eke Oyibo Market, Amawbia in Awka South Council Area, were gutted by fire at the early hours of Friday, 18th February, 2022.
Sources said that the inferno which started between 4.30 and 5am on the fateful day, was caused by power surge, and twelve shops were razed by the inferno.
It was also understood that by the time men of the fire Service arrived, the fire had been put under control by youths of the area, preventing the fire from destroying the entire market.
The incident attracted the attention of the Transition Committee Chairman, Awka South Local Government Area, Mr Leo Nwuba, who visited the market to see things for himself.
Mr Nwuba expressed sorrow at the magnitude of damage and losses caused by the fire and commiserated with victims, assuring them of government’s intervention.
Mr Nwuba reemphasized the need for fire safety consciousness to check increasing rate of fire disasters in the state.
Commenting, the President General of Amawbia Town Union, Sir Godwin Aronu, spoke on finding lasting solution to prevent future occurrence.
The Chairman of the Market, Mr Peter Nwogbo, commended the youths, fire service officials and other security personnel for their efforts in preventing the fire from causing more havoc.
Some of the affected traders who spoke to newsmen expressed shock at the incident, lamenting that their means of livelihood had just disappeared with the fire.
They appealed to the state and federal governments as well as good spirited individuals, and organizations to come to their aid.
