Police Arrest Mother Of Five Over Marriage Proposal Scam

Police in Anambra State has arrested a woman woman who allegedly conspires with others still at large to dupe single ladies through phony marriage proposals.

The suspect, Mrs Akunna Roseline Udom, a mother of five, was said to be a member of a notorious 3-member gang with whom she operated, to defrauded more than five young ladies of a total sum of more than nine million naira .

Confessing to the crime at the State Police Command in Awka, the suspect said her role in the gang she joined early last year was to approach single young ladies who work in corporate offices like banks, civil service or sales girls, and tell them that her brother who is based overseas, is looking for a wife, and that she would want to recommend them to the brother as wife.

The suspect would later send the potential victim’s phone number to one of her male gang members, who would then call the victim and pretend to reside oversea, after which he would claim to have returned, and then invite the lady to a particular place for physical meeting .

At the location, the gang would use diabolical means to dupe the victim of huge amount of money running into millions.

It was gathered that the gang would also tell their victims that they possess the spiritual power with which to cleanse their afflictions and double any amount they bring.

One of the gang’s victims and sales girl at a market in Onitsha, Miss Chiamaka, said she met the suspect, at a new generation bank, also in Onitsha, and that after she visited her for a marriage talk, the suspect kept calling her on phone until she and her gang members duped her of three million naira she went to deposit for her employer at a bank on a latter day.

Another victim and friend to Chiamaka, Miss Ujunwa, who accompanied Chiamaka for the marriage talk, said she was also duped of three hundred thousand naira by the gang.

Addressing journalists, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, advised the public to be careful in dealing with strangers.

He also advised the youths to shun the get-rich-quick syndrome and engage in legitimate businesses that will better their lives and society.

He said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
