The Nigerian Correctional Service has admitted major flaws in handling the nation’s 3,845 death row inmates, including 81 women.
Assistant Controller General Cyrus Lekatile told a public hearing in Abuja that overcrowding, limited funds, and the psychological toll of indefinite detention are straining the system.
He noted that death row prisoners are largely excluded from rehabilitation programs and often face long delays in appeals or clemency decisions.
He also said that Political reluctance to sign execution warrants has created a de facto moratorium, further clogging facilities. Lekatile called for urgent reforms to capital punishment laws, better funding, and improved inmate management to ease tensions and security risks in prisons.
