A wooden bridge linking the National Youth Services Corps Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu and Ananso axis of Old Namkpu with other Villages of Namkpu Quarters, which hitherto, collapsed some months ago, has been reinforced.
The reinforcements exercise was carried out by Namkpu youths after Dulmer(Motorized Chain Saw) had cut the wood used for the reinforcement into desired lengths and thicknesses.
The wooden bridge was reported to have rotten as a result of series of decays triggered by the combination of moisture and fungi activities as the woods used for the bridge were not treated with a preservative. This made the bridge to be a death trap for the users, particularly Motorcycle users.
Kpakpando gathered that it was during the construction of Igwe Junction to NYSC camp Road some years ago which was later abandoned by the past administration, that the local bridge was constructed to sustain already paralyzed economic activities within the area.
In an interview, a resident of the Ananso radius, Ekene Okoye, told kpakpando that the situation was worrisome as his mother was usually stranded any time she visits Afor Market due to the shaky nature of the rotten wood and most times return home through Nibo – Umuawulu road.
He appealed to the Government of Prof. Soludo to consider the plights of aged men and women in the area and mobilize the contractor that handled the abandoned project, so that construction activities will resume at the site especially now the dry season has just set in.
Contributing, another resident who gave his name as Mr. Okey Uchendu, suggested that an immediate and long-lasting solution would be for the state government through the ministry of works to liaise with the contractor that started the road project to resume construction, citing numerous economic importance of the road when completed to the brother Communities of Umuawulu and Mbaukwu including other neighboring communities.
The exercise climaxed with teamworks displayed as the several logs of wood used were installed sequentially by the five villages that make up Namkpu Quarters.
