Five persons lost their lives in a road crash that occurred at the Nawfia Junction, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, in the early hours of yesterday,
Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, in a release, said the accident involving a Highlander and a Toyota Hiace Bus, occurred around half past six in the morning.
Eyewitness accounts said the bus driver was on speed, lost control, and rammed into the Highlander from behind.
The two vehicles caught fire, while the occupants, 2 male adults, and 3 female adults were completely burnt.
DRC Onabe said men of the Fire Service arrived at the scene to put out the fire, while the FRSC Rescue team from RS5.3 Sector Command, Awka, were on the ground to manage traffic and clear the obstruction caused by the crash.
A source who identified the victims said they include two Reverend Sisters- Reverend Sisters Virginia Obike, and Monica Ilem, as well as the driver, Mr. Chamberlain Umunakwe.
Others involved in the accident were a husband and wife.
Reverend Sister Virginia Obike was the Principal of Handmaid’s Secondary School, Amansea, Awka, North Council Area, while Reverend Sister Monika Ilem, was the Bursar of the School.
The source said they were traveling to Amansea in a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to the school and were coming from Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum LGA, where they went to purchase bags of rice for the school.
The Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra State, Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commiserated with the families of the dead victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.
He warned motorists to avoid Speeding and ensure they keep to the stipulated speed limit.
He noted that speed thrills but also kills, calling on all to help keep the roads safe from crashes.
