As part of measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, government owned schools in Lagos State are to maintain the shift system which was introduced last year when they reopened for the first term of the year.
According to reports from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the shift entails that SS1 and JSS 3 classes will go to school only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while JSS 2 and SS 2 will go to school only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The pupils in primary school were divided into two forms with one set going to school on Mondays and Wednesdays and for three hours on Friday morning while the other set attends school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for three hours on Friday afternoon.
The sources in the Ministry of Education confirmed that the shift system is to avoid large gatherings and to enforce social and physical distancing.
It will be recalled that Oyo state joined Lagos to observe the shift system last year . However , when announcing school reopening for the second term this year, it discarded the shift system .
Last year , stakeholders in Education in the state, argued that the Shift system doesn’t allow for enough interaction between teachers and students. They argued that it also placed those in Private school at a disadvantage over their counterparts in public school. The Lagos State Government didn’t include the Private schools in the shift system because it is assumed they have less pupils and students in their school, hence it will be easy to practice physical and social distancing.
