Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Chioma Ezeyimulu, has disclosed that every ward in the state now has a functional primary health care centre.
She stated this during the opening ceremony of a five day training programme for sixty newly recruited midwives under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund in Anambra State.
The training is been organized by the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency in collaboration with National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
She urged the participants to work in line with the principles of primary health care.
She also informed that Anambra State now has three hundred and thirty- two wards being used under Basic Health Care Provision fund, and observed that lack of skilled workers at the point of labour and childbirth contribute to maternal and infant mortality.
She further revealed that at the end of the workshop, the newly recruited midwives will be posted to various facilities to ensure skilled labour in the facilities, and advised the participants to give in their best throughout the workshop..
Declaring the programme open, the Board Chairman, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Professor Jeoshephat Ogbuagu, urged participants to maintain optimal professionalism wgen they are deployed to their various facilities.
In their addresses, the Programme Manager, National Emergency Maternal and Child Health Intervention Centre, Dr. Valentine Obiejekwu, and the Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Nwankwo, maintained that the major thrust of the training is to acquaint the new midwives on suitable strategies to combat maternal and infant mortality.
Speaking on behalf of the Midwives, one of the participants, Mrs Juliet Ifechukwu, promised that they would put in their best in the course of their job.
